Podcast Gloria Translating Architecture with Gloria Kloter Podcast

Often, the story behind architects is that they always knew that they want to become an architect or they got inspired to become an architect because they knew someone in the field and saw their work. But Gloria Kloter says that wasn’t her story.

While Gloria did have a relative who started but didn’t finish architecture school, she says that she wasn’t close to him or inspired by him. She did know that she always loved art, drawing, and poetry, which she says is related to architecture in her mind. As a young child, she also enjoyed playing with dolls and creating spaces for them out of the materials at hand.

In high school, a friend of Gloria’s who was a little ahead of her in school went to college and started out in architecture school. Because Gloria visited her often, she saw the kind of work that her friend was doing. And while the architecture work was very difficult for the friend, Gloria’s problem-solving brain kicked in and she saw potential solutions. That’s when she decided to give architecture a try.

In today’s podcast, Gloria talks about working through college, graduating and starting her own business in the Dominican Republic, coming to the United States, and becoming a licensed architect here. Listen to what she has to say about the process for architects transferring from the DR to the US, taking the AREs, and deciding to start a business with her husband. You’ll also hear about what it’s like for her to manage her architectural career, her business, and parenthood.
